Detox diets and cleanses have been so popular for years now. Eat all you want and then do a 5-day detox diet, right? No, thanks. I’m not a fan of extreme changes (including temporary ones), especially because I’ve tried to do a few of these over the years myself and always felt horrible during the detox and went right back to my old ways immediately after.
What I do believe in is building small simple routines throughout the day that help my body naturally detox. Below are 5 ways I help my body naturally cleanse and eliminate toxins.
1. Drink Warm Lemon Water
I’ve been doing this for years now and can absolutely feel a difference when I don’t. I try to start every morning with a glass of hot water mixed with the juice of half a lemon. Stir and sip. That’s it! I know some folks add cayenne pepper and/or honey, but I like it keep it simple (I’m also just not a fan of cayenne pepper in my drinks).
2. Eat Clean Real Food
This is probably one of the most important things I do to allow my body to naturally eliminate toxins and also promote health. It’s also the primary purpose of this blog and everything I stand for.
To me, eating clean means filling your days with mostly organic real food (and if you can’t do organic, that’s fine too), getting rid of the processed food and junk (including the “healthy” junk food — more on that later), and just eating more homemade food. This time of the year, I find myself making a lot of soups and nourishing bowls. They’re easy to prep in advance and enjoy later.
3. Take a Detox Bath
Okay, so I don’t do this every day. I wish I did because it’s amazing and the most relaxing way to end the day. I’ve always been a bubble bath kind of person. So when I started taking detox baths, I was in heaven. Fill up with your tub with hot water (or the warmest you can handle). Mix in 1 cup of baking soda (you can buy large bags at the grocery store), 1 cup of Epsom salt, and 10 drops of lavender or peppermint essential oil. Soak and relax in the tub for about 20 minutes and then wrap yourself up in a warm robe.
I also take steps to make sure I’m using natural skincare to limit toxins in the first place.
4. Sweat it Out
A good sweat session a few times a week not only produced endorphins and just makes you feel amazing, it also allows you to sweat out toxins from your body naturally through your skin.
One of my favorites ways to sweat it out is going to a hot yoga class at my favorite yoga studio. Stick to something you enjoy — not something that everyone else is doing. Maybe you love running, working out at the gym, or kickboxing. If you stick to something you actually look forward to doing, it’s going to become a habit.
5. Sip on a Detox Tea
Up until a few years ago, my cupboard was filled with a random assortment of teas from various places. I started learning more about how important it is to drink organic tea from trusted sources. Why? Most teas aren’t even washed before they are packaged, which means if a tea was sprayed with pesticides, those pesticides are floating around in your cup.
Today, there are only a handful of brands I drink and recommend to others. Traditional Medicinals is one of the few brands I trust and enjoy on a regular basis. My favorite detox tea is EveryDay Detox by Traditional Medicinals. I love how it tastes sweet, sour, bitter, pungent, and salty – all at the same time.
