Why I Use Plant-Based Cleaning Products

Over the years, I've gradually become more mindful about the foods I consume to the products I use on my skin and products I use to clean my space. Thankfully, Home Made Simple recently launched a line of products to help me make the cleaning part a lot easier.

This post was created in partnership with Home Made Simple. Thank you for supporting brands that support Real + Vibrant. As always, all opinions expressed are unbiased and my own.

If you've read my story, you know I suffered from chronic migraines for most of my adult life. Along with making gradual changes in the food I was consuming, I took steps to improve the products I slather on my skin and the products I used to keep my space clean. That's because all of these things have had an impact on my health.

After feeling sick for so many years, I've really fallen in love with feeling well and healthy on a regular basis. So while I'm not perfect, I aim to use products that support my health instead of hurting it.

    Why Plant-Based Cleaning Products?

I've used a number of plant-based cleaning products over the last couple of years. After all, not only is it better for my own health but also the environment. And while I love the idea of it all, most of the products I've tried just don't work well when it comes down to performing their job -- cleaning.

That's why I'm really excited about the Home Made Simple cleaning products. I've been using them for a few weeks - not only are these plant-based, but they actually work!

    Cleaning Products Powered by Plants

As a one-person team running my business, I want to use products that are not only good for me but also effective. When I first started learning more about the Home Made Simple product line, what really stuck out to me is that these plant-based products are inspired by nature.

All of their products are made with biodegradable cleaning ingredients, formulated without phosphates, parabens, phthalates and gluten (and while I'm not gluten-free, this is a nice bonus). Plus, they are dye free and made in the US. And all of their products are packaged in 100% recyclable bottles.

I’ve used their dish soap, all-purpose surface cleaner, laundry detergent, and softener. They work really well… plus, they smell amazing!!

    Four cleaning products lined up.

    Home Made Simple Product Lineup

Over the last few weeks, I've been using the following products:

    • Dish Soap - This dish soap is tough on grease without all the extra chemicals.  It's made with plant-based ingredients (95% of ingredients are plant-derived) for a powerful clean. After a full day of recipe testing and shooting, which results in a lot more dishes than my dishwasher can handle, I use the Rosemary scented dish soap, which smells so fresh.
    • Multi-Purpose Cleaner - As someone who spends much of my time in the kitchen, I'm always cleaning up a mess (plus I have Titus, my cat, to clean up after). It's great for the kitchen (and bathroom) counters, doorknobs, my coffee table (which is where I shoot all my photos), and every other hard surface in my space.
    • Detergent - Blended with plant-based ingredients (75% of ingredients are plant-derived), this liquid laundry detergent fights stains and works great even in old water, yet it's gentle on my skin. It's free of phosphates, dyes, or optical brighteners (a fluorescent substance typically added to detergents to produce a whitening effect on laundry) and made with renewable energy. If you aren't a fan of scents, I love that they have an Unscented one as well.
    • Fabric Softener - similar to the detergent, the softener is also blended with plant-based ingredients (70% of ingredients are plant-derived) for fresh, soft laundry. Similar to the detergent, it's also formulated without phosphates, dyes, or optical brighteners and made with renewable energy. And it also comes in Unscented as well!
