    Ingredients

    Cheese ball ingredients on table.

To make a cheese ball, you'll need the following ingredients. Refer to the recipe card for the full list of ingredients and measurements.

Cream cheese: The key ingredient is cream cheese, thanks to its smooth texture and ability to hold a ball shape. Its mild flavor is an excellent base to pair with other cheeses and seasonings. Remember to bring it to room temperature before you make a cheese ball. It makes it easy to mix the other ingredients and form a smooth ball.

Sharp cheddar cheese: Now, this is where the flavor comes in. Sharp cheddar cheese has a strong, tangy, and robust taste. It pairs well with the mild and rich cream cheese base. You can even use extra-sharp cheddar cheese for a stronger flavor.

Fresh chives: A fresh, mild onion flavor makes each bite more lively. Chives also add crunch and texture without overwhelming the cheese ball. If you don't have chives, you can substitute them with green onions. Make sure to chop them finely.

Fresh parsley: Chopped parsley offers a clean, herbal, and fresh taste that's a touch bitter. It adds a pop of flavor and balances the richness of the cheeses.

Lemon juice: Brightens the flavor with a small amount of acidity. Lemon juice enhances the tang and sharpens the flavor of the savory cheese ball.

Worcestershire sauce: A British fermented condiment with incredible depth of flavor. It adds acidity, slight sweetness, and umami. Worcestershire sauce enhances the savory flavors of the cheeses. Traditionally, it contains vinegar, anchovies, molasses, sugar, and seasonings. Now, there are many variations, ranging from gluten-free to vegan to low-sodium.

Garlic powder: Adds an essence of garlic without overpowering the rest of the cheese ball. It pairs well with the other savory flavors and is milder than raw garlic.

Onion powder: Enhance it with a mild, savory flavor without shedding a tear from chopping actual onions. It's also not as strong as onions. It won't overwhelm the other ingredients. Onion powder keeps the flavors balanced.

Black pepper: Balance the salty and savory flavors with a touch of heat. Black pepper adds warmth and spiciness in the background. It adds depth without changing the overall flavor profile. For a spicier kick, add some red pepper flakes or a dash of cayenne pepper.

Pecans: Chop toasted pecans and use them as the exterior coating for crunch. They bring a rich, nutty flavor and texture. Other nuts also work well for the coating. You can try walnuts, pistachios, hazelnuts, almonds, or macadamias. If you have a nut allergy, other crispy foods are tasty alternatives. Try crushed pretzels, chips, seeds, herbs, or dried fruit.

How to Make the Best Cheese Ball

The following are the steps and process images to make a cheese ball. Refer to the recipe card for the complete set of instructions.

    1. Beat cream cheese until smooth. It takes about 3 minutes for the cream cheese to become soft and creamy. The best way to ensure you get a smooth result is to let it sit at room temperature for an hour before beating. I recommend using a stand mixer because it's the most efficient way to soften cream cheese. You can also use a hand mixer if you don't have a stand mixer.

    2. Mix ingredients. Add the shredded cheddar cheese, herbs, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, and seasonings to the mixer bowl. Mix until the ingredients are combined. If you want to use other ingredients to mix in, this is where you add them.

    3. Transfer into a plastic wrap-lined bowl. Use a spatula to transfer the mixture into a bowl lined with plastic wrap. The wrap is key to forming a smooth ball.

    4. Mold it into a ball. Take the edges of the plastic wrap and twist them closed. Take your time in shaping it. Then, refrigerate it for at least 1 hour to firm up and maintain its perfect round shape.

    5. Toast pecans. In a dry skillet or saucepan over medium heat, toast raw pecans. Stir frequently, as it'll take about 3 to 5 minutes. Once toasted, let the pecans cool, and finely chop them. Spread the chopped pecans on a plate. I prefer the stovetop method because it's faster than using the oven.

    6. Roll in finely chopped nuts. Remove the cheese ball from the fridge and unwrap it. Then, gently roll it in the chopped pecans. Press lightly to ensure the nuts stick evenly to the exterior. You can also hold the ball in one hand and use your other hand to pick up and press the nuts onto it.

    7. Serve on a platter. Now you're ready to serve it. Set the cheese ball on a platter. Surround it with vegetables, crackers, pretzels, crostini, and any other sides you prefer. Place a cheese knife on the platter to make spreading easy. Once your guests start digging in, it's only a matter of time until it's gone.

    Pro Tips

Set out all the ingredients before you start. By having everything ready, mixing in the ingredients will be a breeze. It keeps your kitchen organized and stress levels low. This is also known as mise en place, a French culinary phrase meaning "set up."

Chop the ingredients into small pieces. All the ingredients you mix need to be in small pieces. This ensures there's consistency throughout the mixture. It also makes it easier to spread.

Shred your own cheese. It's so worth it to grate or shred your own cheese because it'll taste richer and creamier. Pre-shredded cheese comes with anti-caking agents. A common one is cellulose, and it keeps it from clumping. Buy a block of cheese and enjoy a fresher, tastier cheese ball.

Add the coating after chilling the cheese ball. Let the cheese ball get firm in the fridge without the pecans. By adding the coating later, you'll have a nice, crunchy exterior.

Use a cheese knife to spread. If you're using thinner or delicate crackers, a cheese or butter knife is a must. It'll allow you to spread the cheese without breaking the cracker.

    How to Store

While it's rare, leftovers can happen. If it does, store the remaining in an airtight container or wrap it in plastic wrap and aluminum foil. Make sure it's tight to maintain the texture and freshness. Then, store it in the refrigerator, where it can last up to 5 days.

You can make a cheese ball ahead of time, and it'll last up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator. How long it lasts depends on the freshness of your ingredients. The key to storing a cheese ball is to wrap it air-tight in plastic wrap and aluminum foil.

It's best not to include the exterior coating; otherwise, it won't be crunchy. Keep the cheese ball in the coldest part of your fridge to ensure it holds its shape well. It'll preserve its freshness and flavor, and keep it from drying out.

You can also freeze a cheese ball for up to 1 month. Wrap it in a layer of plastic wrap and aluminum foil. After wrapping it, put it in a freezer-safe bag or container. Then, thaw it in the fridge overnight, and add the chopped toasted pecans right before serving.

What to Serve With a Cheese Ball

Cheese ball platter with vegetables and crackers next to a bowl.

Sturdy crackers are a classic for dipping into a cheese ball, but there are many foods you can add to your platter. The following are other serving suggestions:

    • Fresh fruit and vegetables: Anything firm, like apples, pears, carrots, cucumbers, celery, radishes, cauliflower florets, and peppers. Grapes and berries also taste amazing with cheese.
    • Chips: Pita chips, tortilla chips, or another sturdy, thick chip will do well with scooping.
    • Pretzels: Whether chewy or crunchy, pretzels are an amazing and sturdy carrier.
    • Crostini: Crisp and golden little toasts that make the perfect base. All you need is a baguette, olive oil, and sea salt.

Aside from using the cheese ball as a dip, try it as a spread. Use it as the base for a sandwich or wrap. It adds a lot of flavor and creaminess.

    Variations and Substitutions

Cheese balls are popular appetizers because they're delicious, easy to make, and customizable. You can prepare them in so many different ways, from using various herbs, spices, or coatings. The following are variations to try and ingredient substitution ideas.

Add hot sauce. It's a common way to add flavor and a little heat. A tablespoon of hot sauce, like Tabasco, Sriracha, or buffalo sauce, is perfect. If you're worried it'll be too spicy, use half a tablespoon. I've tried one tablespoon of serrano hot sauce, and even friends who don't like spicy food loved it. They were surprised by the lack of spiciness, noting that it enhanced the flavor.

Make it spicy. If you want to bring the heat, use jalapenos, cayenne pepper, or any other hot pepper you prefer. Small bits of peppers in the cheese ball add texture, crunch, and flavor.

Use other cheeses. Instead of sharp cheddar, use other cheeses with bold flavors. You can try blue cheese, goat cheese, Gouda, gorgonzola, or pepper jack.

Add dried fruit to the mixture. Dried cranberries, apricots, or raisins are delicious in a cheese ball. The subtle sweetness and tartness balance the savory flavors. Dried fruit also adds texture with every bite.

Make it vegan. Substitute with dairy-free cream cheese and cheddar cheese. It's just as incredible and will impress vegans and non-vegans alike.

Cover it in everything bagel seasoning. Garlicky, nutty, and crunchy. Everything bagel seasoning is an easy way to add tons of flavor. You can use store-bought or make it yourself. It's made with poppy seeds, sesame seeds, dried onion, dried garlic, and flaky sea salt. Add a light coating of the seasoning, or it'll become too salty.

Make it smoky. Smoked Gouda or cheddar can be a substitute for sharp cheddar. You can also add smoked paprika to enhance the flavor.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What's the best cheese for a cheese ball?

The best cheeses for a cheese ball are cream cheese and sharp cheddar. Cream cheese is the foundation. It provides a mild taste and a smooth, pliable texture that holds everything together. The sharp cheddar is where the flavor comes in. It adds a tangy and nutty taste.

What are common cheese ball mistakes?

The biggest mistake when making a cheese ball is starting with cold ingredients. Out-of-the-fridge cream cheese is firm and difficult to mold into a smooth ball. Allow your ingredients to sit at room temperature for 1 hour. Other mistakes include not chilling it in the fridge after shaping and overfilling. Too many ingredients make it difficult to shape.

What's the secret to a smooth cheese ball?

The secret to a smooth cheese ball is to make sure the cream cheese is at room temperature. This ensures the cream cheese is malleable and combines better with other ingredients. It gives your cheese ball a smooth texture.
